新竹车站兴建于日据时代大正二年(民国二年，公元1913年)，当时称为新竹驿，　属巴洛克式建筑。高耸的平板瓦屋顶具有几何构成的和谐感，四面皆有时钟的钟塔为其最大特色。原站体只有103坪，后来陆续增建了左右两边平房式的洋楼。
