by Jill Clark. Monday, 07 July 2008
A network of ski-resort style cable cars over the Thames was today being considered by London mayor Boris Johnson.
Commuters would be carried from the O2 arena in Greenwich to the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf and possibly to the site of the 2012 Olympics, under a blueprint from Lord Rogers, the mayor’s architecture adviser.
Eight river crossings are being proposed to help cope with development in east London.
One concept would see cable cars “docking” inside a skyscraper in Canary Wharf.
The cable cars would be a cheaper alternative than building conventional crossings, such as bridges which would need to be high or have hydraulic lifting systems to allow large boats to pass.
Mike Davies, director of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (RSHP), said: “East of Tower Bridge, the river is a complete barrier.
“For the communities on either side, they might as well be staring across the English Channel to France. If designed properly, the cable cars would add to the skyline – you’d just see two elegant pylons and a string of pods floating in the air.”
The cable-car system would cost one-third of an alternative cycle and pedestrian crossing that is being studied by Transport for London, RSHP claims.
It would also be a greener option than a previously proposed £500m six-lane Thames Gateway road bridge.
The cable network would transport 10,000 people across the river every hour, with pods arriving every 22 seconds. The crossing would take just two minutes.
Davies added: “Imagine flying over the river from the Dome towards the skyscrapers in Canary Wharf. It would be the most fantastic ride.”
The cable car proposal is supported by the Campaign for Better Transport (CBT), calling it an “imaginative” and greener option.
