    UPGRADE work on the Victoria line is stepping up from today and will mean last trains will leave central London shortly after 10pm Monday to Thursday, until November 23.
    The line is closing early so that work to replace the track, power and signalling systems can take place. The upgrade will lead to faster, more reliable journeys, and will also meet increased demand; by 2025 an estimated 213million passengers will use the line each year.
    During the closures, new trains due to be introduced in 2009 will be tested. Advantage will be taken of the early closing to speed up modernisation and refurbishment work at Brixton, Euston, Green Park, Oxford Circus, Walthamstow Central and Warren Street stations.
    A dedicated replacement bus service will run at both ends of the line during the early closures, as follows:
    Service A: Calling at Finsbury Park- Manor House-Seven Sisters-Tottenham Hale- Blackhorse Road and Walthamstow.
    Service B: Calling at Victoria- Pimlico-Vauxhall-Stockwell and Brixton.
    Tickets will be accepted on existing local bus services: 2, 24, 30, 36, 88, 123, 185, 230, 436 and on National Rail services as follows: Liverpool Street to/from Walthamstow Central, Tottenham Hale and Seven Sisters; Victoria to/from Brixton and Herne Hill; Elephant & Castle to/from Herne Hill; Waterloo to/from Vauxhall.
    On August 14 and 27, and October 1, the service will run to the normal schedule due to events. To plan your journey, visit tfl.gov.uk/journeyplanner, call 020 7222 1234, pick up a leaflet at Victoria line stations, or speak to station staff.

Victoria Station upgrade

    PASSENGERS using Victoria, one of London Underground’s (LU) busiest and most congested stations, can find out more about forthcoming upgrade plans at a nearby exhibition which opens tomorrow.
    The ￡509million upgrade project, which is due to start in 2009, will increase the size of the station by about 50 per cent. There will also be a new ticket hall, lifts and escalators to ease congestion, and step-free access from street level to Victoria, Circle and District line platforms.
    An exhibition detailing the upgrade proposals is opening tomorrow at 175-179 Victoria Street (close to Victoria station and almost opposite Victoria Palace Theatre).
The exhibition will be running until July 21, from 11am-7pm Tuesday to Friday, and from 10am to 1pm on Saturday.
    LU managing director, Tim O’Toole, said: 'Upgrading Victoria Underground station is a key part of improving the Tube network which will cut congestion and improve access for all our passengers using the station. 'Together with the full Victoria line upgrade, this will deliver much needed capacity and provide a safe, reliable and accessible station, fit for the 21st century.'
